How to Take Mushroom Tinctures: A Beginner's Guide Spruce Creek Mushrooms

Mushroom tinctures are one of the easiest and most effective ways to add functional mushrooms to your daily routine. But if you're new to them, you might have questions: How much do I take? When should I take it? Can I mix them? Do they actually work?

This guide answers all of that — so you can get started with confidence.

What Is a Mushroom Tincture?

A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract made by soaking mushroom material in a solvent — typically alcohol, water, or both — to draw out the beneficial compounds. The result is a potent, fast-absorbing supplement that's far more bioavailable than eating dried mushrooms or taking capsules made from raw mushroom powder.

At Spruce Creek Mushrooms, all of our tinctures use a dual extraction process — both alcohol and hot water — to capture the full spectrum of active compounds in each mushroom. This matters because some key compounds (like triterpenes in Reishi) are only alcohol-soluble, while others (like beta-glucans) are only water-soluble. Dual extraction gives you both.

How Much Should I Take?

The standard serving size for our tinctures is one full dropper (approximately 1 ml) per day. Each bottle contains approximately 30 servings — a one-month supply at the recommended dose.

If you're new to functional mushrooms, starting with one dropper daily is ideal. Some people choose to increase to two droppers per day after a few weeks, but one dropper is effective for most people.

How Do I Take It?

There are two main ways to take a mushroom tincture:

Under the tongue (sublingual). Place one dropper under your tongue and hold for 30–60 seconds before swallowing. This allows the active compounds to absorb directly into your bloodstream through the mucous membranes, bypassing digestion for faster uptake. This is the most efficient method.

Added to a beverage. Stir your dropper into water, coffee, tea, a smoothie, or any other drink. The taste is mild and earthy — it blends easily and won't overpower your drink. This is the most convenient method for daily use.

When Should I Take Each Mushroom?

Timing can make a difference depending on which mushroom you're taking and what you're using it for:

Lion's Mane — Morning. Best taken in the morning or early afternoon to support focus, clarity, and cognitive performance throughout the day. Add it to your morning coffee or tea.

Reishi — Evening. Best taken in the evening to support relaxation, stress relief, and sleep quality. A dropper in a cup of herbal tea before bed is a popular ritual.

Turkey Tail — Any time. Turkey Tail is focused on immune and gut health rather than energy or sedation, so it can be taken any time of day. Many people add it to their morning routine alongside Lion's Mane.

Cordyceps — Morning or pre-workout. Best taken in the morning or 30–60 minutes before exercise to support energy, endurance, and oxygen utilization.

Can I Take More Than One Tincture at a Time?

Yes — mushroom tinctures are generally safe to combine, and many people stack two or more for complementary benefits. A popular combination is Lion's Mane in the morning (for focus) and Reishi in the evening (for sleep and recovery). Turkey Tail pairs well with either as a daily immune foundation.

If you're new to functional mushrooms, we recommend starting with one tincture for two to four weeks before adding another, so you can clearly notice the effects of each.

How Long Until I Notice Results?

Functional mushrooms are not stimulants — they work gradually by supporting your body's underlying systems. Most people begin to notice subtle effects within two to four weeks of consistent daily use, with more pronounced benefits after six to eight weeks.

The key word is consistent. Taking your tincture every day matters far more than the exact time of day or method of delivery.

Are Mushroom Tinctures Safe?

Functional mushrooms like Lion's Mane, Reishi, Turkey Tail, and Cordyceps have long histories of safe use in traditional medicine and are well-tolerated by most people. That said, as with any supplement, we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before starting — especially if you are pregnant, nursing, have a medical condition, or are taking medications.
